How can hypnotherapy help me?
Hypnotherapy can help with a great number of challenges that any of us can be working
with:
Smoking cessation - Weight control - Anxiety - Phobias - Panic attacks and disorders
- Performance anxiety and performance enhancement- Psychosexual problems (such as
erectile dysfunction and anorgasmia) - Confidence – Motivation – Stress - Depression
- Addictions - Excessive drinking - Eating disorders - Repetitive thoughts - Insomnia
and other sleep disorders such as night terrors and nightmares - Skin conditions
- Coping with medical crisis - Bereavement - Adapting to prosthesis - Repeat behaviours
and destructive behaviours - Post traumatic stress disorder - Pain control – Hypertension
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) - Obsessive and compulsive thoughts, feelings and
actions…and many others.
How does hypnotherapy work?
Modern hypnotherapy is a combination of traditional hypnosis and modern psychotheraputic
techniques, bringing together the best of psychodynamic therapy, behavioural psychology,
cognitive psychology, neuro-linguistic programming with the skills of a counsellor
to create approaches to fit the individual’s needs - all enhanced through the medium
of hypnosis. Each approach is tailored to fit the individual. Your ways of thinking
and seeing the world will be used to produce the best results in the shortest time.
The modern hypnotherapist looks to balance the individual’s needs, with the best
evidence-based approaches.
What will you experience?
If you have never been hypnotised then be assured it is usually relaxing and enjoyable.
Many people compare the experience to highly pleasant sun bathing or intense day
dreaming; their thoughts drift away as their body relaxes, and yet at the same time
they maintain an awareness of what is being said and done. It is not the same as
sleep, rather it is a sleep like state in which the mind becomes open to the changes
which you are motivated to make.
Is it safe?
Hypnosis is considered a low-risk approach; however there are certain considerations
that you need to be aware of. Certain psychiatric conditions increase the risk factor,
specifically psychosis and schizophrenia, and if you are diagnosed with either condition
it is not recommended that you engage in hypnotherapy. Some conditions require a
medical diagnosis before work can progress; depression, panic attacks, erectile dysfunction
and IBS to give a few examples. This is because they may have physical causes which
need to be addressed with medication or ruled out before hypnosis can proceed. There
are also factors which may prohibit certain techniques, so I will take a general
medical history to identify these as part of your case history.
